If you really want to make internet marketing a way for you to make a living, then you have to approach it the way you would if you were setting up a store in a mall or any other brick and mortar business you might imagine.

Think about the steps you would take if you were investing thousands of dollars to open a store in a mall.  The first thing you would have to do is a lot of planning.  You would determine what costs you might have to get involved with, what merchandise you would have to purchase and where, how many employees you would need and many other things to figure out exactly what your expenses would be. 

Then you would have to create sales projections and goals.  You would determine what your sales will be the first week, the first month, subsequent months and the first year.  You would even have to create a 5 year plan if you were going to take your ideas to a bank for financing. 

Your internet marketing business should be treated the same. You many not have as many expenses to worry about, and may not have employees to worry about, but there are going to be expenses that you need to plan for.  Web hosting, advertising, ghostwriters, learning and training materials, eBay listing fees, picture hosting sites and graphic designers to name a few.

Just like a brick and mortar business you need to have sales and revenue goals too.  You should set goals of what you think your sales could be one week, one month, month by month and the first year.  You should set goals beyond one year, just like you would for  any business you were starting.

This is something that the majority of internet marketers who are not successful don’t do.  They treat their internet marketing business like a hobby, not a business.  They throw up a website with a product or affiliate links and say to themselves, “let’s see what this will do.” 

There is a well know saying that says if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.  That is so true when it comes to any business venture, and it is just as true for internet marketing.  Whether you want to sell your own products, sell affiliate products, make money from Google adsense or sell on eBay, you must treat it like a business. 

You can only achieve what you plan to achieve.  If you want to be successful as an online marketer, you need to be serious about your business.  You need to treat your online venture as a business and not like a hobby.  The more you treat it like a business, the more successful you will be.
