Top 10 Tips On How NOT To JV With A Millionaire I.M. GURU…
by rayjohnson | July 31, 2008 | under Internet Marketing, Joint Ventures |
I learned a valuable lesson today in my online business, and that’s how NOT to request a joint venture proposition with a HUGE Internet Marketing guru. I won’t be saying WHO the guru is, but he is one of the biggest marketers online today…
I made a few mistakes in my approach that I want YOU, NOT to make!
So read below and learn from some of these mistakes and benefits and make sure you apply these principles when trying to hit that “life changing” deal.
1. Never approach the guru unprofessionally
2. Never focus on yourself first - ALWAYS put the guru’s best interests FIRST.
3. ALWAYS ask to help promote the guru’s products and services first (if necessary for 100% commissions TO the guru) so you make ZERO profits from any sales.
4. Never believe you have nothing to give the guru - you can perhaps trade some of your knowledge in other areas like helping THEM get even more JV’s, posting in forums and on blogs with links to THEIR websites and services.
5. Alway’s build long term friendship before requesting a JV.
6. If you are emailing the guru, make SURE your email subject line sticks out - be creative to attract attention to get your message read. Perhaps even send a postcard to their address if you can research it.
7. Always name drop to the guru if you have received testimonials from other high flyers.
8. Always try to give feedback to the guru to suggest improvement on their products (it will help them make more sales in the long term)
9. When giving JV access to your products always try to show the product, the salespage, the bonuses and even a JV benefits video LIKE THIS ONE I USE - plus a conversion rate or recent sales volumes of your product.
10. Never give up! The internet marketing business is huge - if you receive “no” then politely and respectfully thank the guru for taking the time to read your email, and move on!
A huge lesson learned for me which will stand me in good stead for the years to come in Internet Marketing, and remember - these tips should not just be left for the big players in Internet Marketing, you should apply them to any future JV you try and clinch, no matter how big or small their name is.
I hope you have gained real value from this post today and would appreciate your comments or suggestions to add to this list. Have I missed anything off? Let me know!

Out of all the tips,Ray, I think #5 is the most important. Gaining someone’s respect first is the key to to any relationship in any walk of life and internet marketing is no different.
I would say that you shouldn’t even think about approaching a top marketer until you have something to give them first. Once you give them that they will remember you when it’s your turn to receive.
The law of reciprocity does work which is why all the top marketers are doing it now. We can all use it to our advantage.

This is a good post and an important topic.
I think that people need to understand that ‘gurus’ don’t particularly like to be called ‘gurus’ at least not any of the ones I know. They are just people like you and me.
I have been able to build some great friendships by treating people as my peers and not by ‘throwing myself’ at their feet or begging for help.
Find a common interest, build a relationship through pleasant conversation and ask for advice. If you maintain an appropriate ‘business posture’ you will attract people with similar interests. Before you know it the ‘gurus’ are approaching you. Not because they need you.. but just because they see that you are a genuine person. That is a position of power.
Always remember, with great power comes great responsability. Don’t ever abuse a professional relationship. Build your own business, don’t expect someone else to do it for you.

Thats my two cents.

Hi Ray!
Excellent blog post. And great stuff, Omar.
I believe #2 and #5 (focusing on THEM first and building the relationship before you approach them) are paramount.
This is the case with any relationship you build. It’s attractive networking. When you focus on others first you’re showing a sincere interest in them and who they are.
All of these tips will come in handy very soon for me I am sure! Thank you. I appreciate you. All the way out in Stafford, VA -
