    Glad to see you’re still with us. I thought your subject line of “Ray Johnson is dead” was quite interesting, it’s certainly one way to get attention. Is it the right way?

    Some might be offended especially if they’ve just lost someone, but then again we’ve all lost people at varying points in our lives. Life goes on for everyone else, that’s a simple fact of life.

    Was your subject line any worse than the usual
    “The Death of Adsense”
    “The Death of PPC”
    etc etc nonsense we all get in our inboxes?

    Or the ridiculous “I made $361,651.77 in 7 days” - does that still work? And why stop counting at 7 days, why not have a figure for 10 days, 20 days?

    As marketers we all have to try and do what we can to get our message in front of people - you succeeded in doing that. We can all take a view on whether we would have used that headline ourselves, but that’s all it is, a view.

    Would I have sent out an email with the headline “Robert Black is dead”? Probably not, but I could have used another headline that others would have found equally surprising.

    What you have done is make yourself stand out from the crowd. That’s a rare thing these days when even the so-called gurus seem to all copy each other’s tired old headlines and wonder why it’s no longer working.

    Some may disagree with your choice of headline, from their point of view they may even be right, but I think you should be applauded for “thinking outside the box” instead of the same old tired marketing.

    Thanks for your thoughts on this.

    I am in the middle on my “train of thought” looking back actually. Yes my message got attention - click throughs and provoked controversy, AND it also persuaded many people to email me with praise AND NOT so much praise!

    But as I have always said - I am outspoken online, and I do as I want to do (YES even it it works well, or falls flat on it’s preverbial!)

    We as IM’ers do NOT always get it right - and those that do are simply lying and bringing the industry down…

    and as for the small number of complainers - I am sorry if I did cause any personal offence, but isn’t time better to be put to good use on building your business?

    There are many factors to consider in building an online business and I luckily have growing success as the days go by, my business is growing all over the net, my subscriber lists are growing by the hour, my sales are growing by the day - so IS one controversial headline my biggest concern.

    Definitely not… controversy is good.

    My mentoring programme is better!

    Well first things first, thank god the headline was not actually true. As for grabbing attention, i would say its a definite YES.

    What it does also say is your not afraid to throw out heart stopping headlines which lets the rest of us know that maybe this might help us other marketers find the confidence to do the same, but as and when its needed rather than trying send out a crazy headline on every email.

    Just my opinion anyway. Brilliant idea ….
