We’ll hear it till the day we die. Traffic is the lifeblood of our business online isn’t it?

Without traffic, you may aswell give up and quit online – yep, it’s that serious.

You won’t be able to build a list and you certainly WON’T be making any money, and that’s simply what success online is all about.

But traffic is tough to generate, it takes time, it can depend on very specific keyword research, and not to mention the MILLIONS of competing websites/pages online… basically traffic, and getting enough of it is the #1 reason that people (even those who DO take massive action) STILL fail online.

This is why for the percentage of people who are savvy enough, PAID TRAFFIC is the only way to go.

Why?

Of course you do! The fact is that everyone wishes they could make more sales, regardless of what, when or how they are selling. Isn’t that the whole point? To make as many sales as possible? I’m sure we can all agree that regardless of how good the product is, if you have a crappy sales page you are just wasting your time by driving traffic to it because no one will buy.

There are so many people out there claiming to have the ‘magic fairy dust’ that will turn your product in to a cash cow. How many of those products have you fallen victim to? Don’t get me wrong, I’m certain that there are some good ones out there but it just seems like we’re being pulled in so many directions all the time. How do you know which is the right one for you?

When it comes to selling a product there are a couple of things that are just common knowledge…
We all know it’s a numbers game and you have to get your product in front of lots of people to make a few sales.

We all know that it’s important to explain the features and benefits of our product and make it easy to understand.

If Walmart didn’t have traffic, no matter how low their prices were, they would not sell anything.  The same goes for your business, it doesn’t matter how good your product is, it doesn’t matter how great your sales letter is, it doesn’t matter how good your deal is, with out traffic your sales will be zero… The question is, then, what is the best traffic building method? 

Which traffic strategy should you use? Should you use article marketing? Should you use Pay Per Click advertising?  Should you use link exchanges?  Should you uses search engine optimization? Should you use an affiliate program? Should you take advantage of social networking and social bookmarking sites? 

The answer is all of the above and more. 

You should never depend on only one strategy for obtaining traffic for a number of reasons.  The biggest of those reasons is that the conditions under which a traffic generation method you are using could change in an instant, rendering that traffic method obsolete. 

For example, in the past, internet marketers used Google adwords, a form of pay per click advertising, to send prospects to a squeeze page so the marketer could collect their name and email.  After a while, Google no longer allowed adwords campaigns to link to a plain squeeze page without any other content.  If you had used this method as your sole traffic producing mechanism, your traffic was immediately shut down by Google.  Now you have no traffic.  That is the danger of only using one traffic building method.  It could conceivably disappear at any moment.

Another example is a traffic method that many had used called trading links.  It consisted of Webmasters trading links with other Webmasters.  Each would link to the other.  This was fine for a time and the search engines provided higher results for your site because of the extra links.  Higher rank meant higher traffic.  But then, as with most strategies, some marketers decided to try and take advantage of this. 

Soon many websites had hundreds of links to sites that had absolutely nothing to do with their niche or their product. Once again, Google caught on and instead of rewarding these kinds of links, Google started penalizing these links.  Instead of helping your Google rank it actually hurt it.  Lower rank meant lower traffic.  Again, one small change in Google and your traffic could come to a screeching halt.

Investment advisors always stress diversification of financial portfolios to protect their investors.  The same logic is good advice for your traffic generating methods.  Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.  Keep your traffic methods varied to protect yourself.  If Google makes a dramatic change, it will have minimal impact on your traffic if you have multiple streams of traffic.  You will be way ahead of your competitor, who may loose all of his traffic when the rules change.

To get an idea why the answer is all of them, visualize a car with an eight cylinder engine.  If only one of the cylinders is firing the car is not going to move.  If four of the eight are working, the car might move but it will be banging and sputtering and running very poorly.  The only way that car is going to run properly is for all eight cylinders to be working in conjunction with each other. 

Creating traffic is the same way.  You may be able to generate traffic using one technique, like SEO or search engine optimization, but you will fall far short of where you could be if you used other methods along with SEO.

Like that eight cylinder motor in the car, you need to have many methods of traffic generation working together.  If you are using SEO on your website, you also need to create incoming links.  Articles would be one method.  PR releases would be another.  Creating a blog would be third way to get links.  Utilizing articles plus PR releases plus blogs in addition to SEO will create many more times the traffic than any one of those by itself.

Even though, if you are using the four methods just mentioned, there is still room for more.  Add web 2.0 methods to your mix.  Utilize Squido, and MySpace to create more links, and more awareness of your site.  Create some promotional videos and distribute them on Youtube.  Now you are utilizing 7 different methods of traffic generation.  You can still do more.

We have not even touched the pay side.  PPC or pay per click can supplement the no cost methods you are using.  Google adsense and overture campaigns add another dimension to your traffic.  Ezine ads constitute one more resource that should be used. 

A well rounded traffic system will also include an affiliate program and a JV initiative. These could result in the  biggest influx of traffic of all.

Can you now see how much more effective your traffic generation will be if you are using the 12 methods noted here instead of just one of them?  The different strategies can compliment each other and work together. 

If some event occurs that takes away one of your traffic sources, for example Google changes it’s listing algorithm so your SEO doesn’t work anymore, you still have 11 other traffic sources still working. 

There are many more traffic generating strategies besides those mentioned here.  The more strategies you can develop to work together for your overall traffic generation, the better off you will be.  More methods mean more traffic, more traffic means more sales and more sales of course translates into more profits.

There are two sides to obtaining traffic, the pay side and the free side.  The pay side includes such activities as Pay Per Click, or PPC marketing, ezine ads, buying links  paying for PR distribution and any other activity that you pay directly for in exchange for getting advertising.  The advantage of the pay side is that it’s results are usually much faster than non paid activity.

For example, with Pay Per Click advertising like Google Adwords, you can set up your ad campaign and literally in a matter of minutes you can have your ad live, running on Google.  The down side of paid traffic generation is of course, the fact that you are laying out money in order to advertise to generate traffic.

On the free side there is keyword and SEO optimization of your website (if you do it yourself), article writing and distribution, using a blog, posting in forums, creating affiliate programs, Posting to web 2.0 sites like MySpace, putting videos on YouTube and getting authority backlinks.

In contrast to paid traffic generation, free traffic generation takes more time.  For example, if you use article writing to promote your website you need to write articles and then upload them to article directories.  Ezine editors and Webmasters looking for content for their venues, find your articles at the article directories and post them on their sites and in their ezines. 

Over time your articles spread throughout the internet.  Depending how good the article is, how much useful information it contains and how popular the subject is, you could end up with literally thousands of copies of your articles all linking back to your website.  This viral process can take months to propagate enough to have an effect on your traffic.  In the long run this is a great way to get traffic.

Most successful traffic generation is a blend of paid and free traffic generation.  In the beginning if you want quick results you may do more paid traffic generation.  As time passes and your free traffic efforts begin to reach critical mass, you may need less or even no paid traffic generation.

SEO is a process of choosing the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases related to your site and ensuring that this ranks your site highly in search engines so that when someone searches for these specific phrases your site at No.1.

It basically involves fine tuning the content of your site along with the HTML, Meta tags images and “on the page” internal linking structure, plus carefully targeted “off the page” link building process. The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL and Ask Jeeves.

Search engines keep ranking algorithms a secret, to reward the search engine users with the most relevant sites searched for, and to deter spammers or ‘cloakers’ from clogging those results. A search engine may use thousands of factors while ranking the listings where the factors themselves and the weight each carries may change continually. Algorithms can differ so widely that a webpage that ranks 1 in a particular search engine could rank 400 in another search engine.

New sites need not be manually “submitted” to search engines to be listed. A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider its contents. I recommend purchasing a text link from an established website. It may be seemingly costly for just one link, but based on the volume of traffic you are likely to receive from this link, consider it an investment.

It can take a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to commence visiting and indexing the new site.

You may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues, there are specialist companies on the net who you can turn to.

Search engine marketing and promotion companies, will look at the plan for your site and make recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic. If you wish, they will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high.

However, this CAN be very costly, and over periods of time, search engine algorithms can change, thus diminishing the ranking of your site. There is only one true way to learn how to get Traffic and learn SEO, and that is to do it yourself to save yourself the continual expense and gain an education in the process.
