First of all, many thanks to all those who took part in our survey – all 209 of you. We said the reason for doing this was to make the data available for everyone, not just ourselves. If you have an existing online business, particularly in the “make money online” niche then you really should be paying attention to this.

The result will help you as a subscriber, and help you make more money as a marketer.

The results have, quite frankly, been an eye opener. I’m going to split them up into different sections and present the data.

As with all such polls there’s a few caveats. People tend to complete polls mostly for negative reasons, i.e. they are mad about something (we, and IM in general, etc) and want to get that off their chest. When I was heavily trading on eBay they regularly sent out customer satisfaction polls. I only ever completed them if eBay had just done something to annoy me (which was pretty often!) and I let them know about it. On those rare occasions where I was reasonably happy with eBay I never bothered to complete their poll.

So polls will generally have a negative slant, it’s very rare someone completes a poll telling a company how happy they are. However I find the results below VERY positive, which is interesting in itself.

Some may question whether a sample of 209 is high enough to give an accurate picture. I feel that it is, consider that the samples used by political pollsters are generally about 800-1000. What’s also very interesting is that I followed the results as they came in – from 30 completed surveys onwards the various percentages barely changed.

Here are the key points:

OUR SUBSCRIBER PROFILE

• 36% been marketing online for over 2 years, 28% less than 3 months
• 59% have more than 2 web sites
• 33% do not know how to create a product, 31% currently working on a product
• 10% have no interest in creating a product
• 88% are making LESS than $100 a month, 60% are making NOTHING
• 79% of marketers are part time, 15% full time and 6% spend no time

ATTITUDE TO “MAKE MONEY ONLINE” PRODUCTS

• 13% spend over $100 a month on IM products, 30% between $20 and $50, 13% spend nothing
• 50% or more want to learn more about Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, List Building Traffic
• 30% or less interested in Content Writing, Copywriting, Ebay, Outsourcing, Time Management, Viral Marketing
• People happy to buy IM products at all price points, 28% would pay over $100, 15% would pay over $250
• People were asked which of these IM products they liked or disliked (Advanced Training, Blogging Systems, Getting Started, List Building, Money Making Systems, Social Networking, Software, Traffic Systems, Video Training) – “likes” varied between 51% and 73% (Traffic Systems most popular), “dislikes” varied between 1% and 13% (most unpopular was Getting Started)

INTEREST, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

• Most popular niches people want to market to:
  Make Money – 66%
  Health and Fitness – 54%
  Self Improvement – 39%
  Money and Finance – 24%
  Pets – 24%
  Computers – 23%
  Hobbies – 23%
• Over 65% know nothing or very little about:
  Copywriting, Creating Videos, List Building, Membership Sites, Outsourcing, Social Networking, Time Management and Organization, Traffic, Video Marketing, Viral Marketing
• Over 65% know a reasonable amount or a lot about Affiliate Marketing
• Over 50% have never tried:
  Copywriting, Creating Ebooks, Creating Videos, Creating Membership Sites, Outsourcing, Video Marketing, Viral Marketing
• Over 50% have unsuccessfully tried:
  Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, Traffic
• There are no aspects of Internet Marketing where over 50% have successfully tried them. The highest rates of success are:
  48% Creating web sites
  32% Ebay
  32% Content Writing

PROMOTIONAL EMAILS

• 36% happy to receive one email per week from us promoting a product, 15% happy to receive TWO such promos a week
• ONLY 2 out of 209 said they “NEVER” wanted to receive any promotional emails from us at all

FREE CONTENT EMAILS

• 54% said send once a week
• 25% said send as often as possible
• 42% said send a weekly newsletter in PDF format
• 35% said send a weekly newsletter in PDF format AND as blog posts

COACHING

• 26% said they didn’t want any coaching
• 57% said they would get coaching if it was less than $200
• 7% would pay over $1000 for coaching

WEB SITE “WISH LIST”

• 79% want step by step PDFs
• 69% want video training
• 43% want a forum
• 37% want a web site/product appraisal service
• 30% want webinars

CONCLUSIONS

Well I’ve drawn up a list of 26 points so far and 11 different things for us to implement on our web site. What’s your opinion? Please share below in the comments.

Here’s 2 of the most surprising outcomes to get you started:

1. Email Marketing is NOT dead. People do WANT to be informed about new products. That took us by surprise, we even did a post a few days ago apologizing for the amount of promo emails, and we’re not the only marketers to do that this year.
2. There’s basically 3 types of subscribers on our list – and almost certainly on your lists too.a) People just getting started and looking for help/information with that
   b) Experienced full time marketers making a good living but looking to raise that to the next level
   c) Folks who just joined the list to get their freebie, aren’t really serious about starting an online business, are unlikely to EVER spend any money, and will unsubscribe as quickly as they joined

I had a pretty relaxing one too, with my girlfriend and kids – then had my family over after Sunday dinner, which is always really great. “Ray – how do you make money online? I have tried and am sick of it, I feel like quitting…”

I cannot write here, the language I use when I hear this over and over. This REALLY P’s me off – seriously, so I have decided to reveal once and for all, the ONLY secret to actually making money online that the guru’s and the guru-followers FAIL to tell you.

…And it is actually this that is KEEPING YOU in THEIR marketing funnel, so that they can sell YOU more products and make THEMSELVES richer.

BUT Before I get into things though, I have to tell you - DON’T QUIT. Please.

If you do, then you are INSTANTLY throwing away potentially the lifestyle of your dreams and admitting defeat, only to be sucked back into the rat-trace to head nowhere fast – and you WON’T achieve results like this:

239 recent sales ranging from $49.95 to $217 from this one website, with a 14.55% sales conversion rate, AND a 8.59% optin ratio.

The big secret to start making money online is quite simply and literally “become the person selling the service/products” – grow a community of follwers, weed out the buyers from the freebies seekers, and then help others to do the same.

Sounds SO stupid and simple and you’d be right to think “what are you on about Ray!” – but I assure you 1 MILLION PERCENT, this is all you need to do…
