Something completely different today because Ray was unfortunately rushed to hospital yesterday morning and is now laid up in bed for a couple of weeks suffering from extremely painful kidney stones - and is struggling to even think about turning on his computer, never mind writing a blog post!

So, rather than you missing out on his usual content crammed full of tips, he’s asked me to temporarily fill in for him… which just goes to show I guess that Ray doesn’t hide away like other marketers and REALLY want’s his followers and clients etc to interact with him. Totally refreshing in in my opinion and what has seperated Ray from the other marketers out there.

So who am I (the mystery man) and how dare I think I can fill Ray’s shoes?

Well, I’ve certainly no intention of even attempting to match Ray’s unique writing style but I do hope I can pass on some information that will be of benefit to you.

My name is Robert Black; I’ve been a student of Ray’s mentoring program for just over 12 months.

Although I’m fairly new to marketing on the internet I ran my own successful offline sales and marketing business for nearly 25 years. Whilst the operational methods may differ, the rules for running a thriving business are pretty much the same – on or off the internet.

You haven’t come here to read my life story, nor to read a sales pitch for Ray’s mentoring program so I’m not going to give you that. But just to give a very brief background I will tell you that I set up a brand new eBay shop selling digital media products shortly after eBay banned digital downloads. In less than 3 months I was the biggest seller in that category on eBay UK…

There are 2 things I want to share with you today

1. Never worry about the competition

2. Everyone has knowledge that someone else will pay for

Competition – NEVER EVER worry about them! Seriously! That’s a lesson I learned many years ago. Focus on what YOU have to offer that’s different to what others are selling. You will ALWAYS find a different sales angle; the market for information products is absolutely huge.

Of course that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do some basic research first. There’s probably not much point in selling your own branded version of Microsoft Office or setting up your own online travel agency – not unless you have a lot of experience in those markets and even then….

In my opinion there has never been a time to worry less about the competition. We are living in a time where bad service is the norm, not just from larger companies but also individual businesses. If you don’t believe me just have a look at the majority of listings on eBay. Badly written in barely legible English, or even worse, written in the dreaded “Txtspeak”. Comic fonts, bright colours, text centrally aligned and out of focus pictures.

Don’t think that’s just confined to eBay. These are a lot of your competitors! All you need to do is be just a little bit better than that, give your customers slightly better service, reply to their emails, thank them for their business and you are onto a winner.

So please don’t worry about your competitors, most of them haven’t got a clue what they are doing – and they are still making money!

My second point is that everyone, including YOU, has information or knowledge in their heads that someone else will pay for. I promise you that you are, or can market yourself as, an expert on something. It may be a hobby, it may be through your J-O-B, it may be something you learned when you were still a child, it may be a particular negative experience you have overcome.

Every internet “guru” tells us to create our own product. Everyone has some piece of specific knowledge that they can sell to others. Sure, you may not be able to write your own eBook about it because you don’t see yourself as a writer but…..you can outsource that to a writer for less than $200.

I tried many different things online from blogging to affiliate marketing to eBay and plenty of things in between. Because I didn’t have a “techie” background and I was a newbie to internet marketing I didn’t think I had knowledge to sell. Then it hit me one day – the principles that led to the success of my own offline business are almost identical to the principles for successfully selling online.

One quick example – about 3 years ago the latest buzz word on the internet was “viral marketing”. Guru after guru was proclaiming this as some great discovery. Funnily enough I was using “viral marketing” to grow my own offline business back in 1985 before internet marketing even existed! Only I didn’t think to call it that or even give it any sort of name, it was just one of my marketing strategies. So don’t get overwhelmed by all the “marketing speak”, it’s almost certainly all been done before.

2 posts in one day is NOT normal for me – but I am SO pumped up! I simply have to get this off my chest. I have just finished a phone call with one of my list members, after they visited another popular blog today… In a nutshell, they asked if it was legal to…

STEAL someone else’s internet marketing product – and sell it as their own – Now, although I don’t advise it, because you CAN get into hot water - it IS entirely possible to “borrow” (for a better word) other marketers work and ideas, and use them to your advantage.

When I’m either on the telephone, or Skype, MSN or whatever with my members, and they STILL say they have not yet taken action on their businesses as they don’t know where to start!

Many people think that online business is difficult to begin, and even more difficult to constantly reinvent ideas for products and services. Not so! Many authors of eBooks have released PLR rights to their works, and yet many people are scared to take advantage of that fact!

Go take a look at some of my sites to draw inspiration, look at my newsletter (which the layout is similar to my friend John Thornhill’s – and he knows it) – look at my blog that you are reading now… Or if not mine – others and GO AND CREATE YOUR OWN!

My buddy Alex Jeffreys has documented the fact the some of his viral eBooks on eBay are PLR, John does it, geez (I do it – from time to time!) – Every marketer does it.

The ABOUT ME page is the most overlooked and underused tool on eBay. Most sellers think that the ABOUT ME page is frivolous information that they don’t have time to worry about.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth.  When used properly your ABOUT ME page can add incremental sales to your income.

The first thing the ABOUT ME page does for you is to help brand you as the expert in what ever field or niche you are selling in.  You can use this page to explain why you are the expert.  You can tell how long you have been involved in the niche, how many books, articles and reports you have written and you can tell them about your real world experience.

The second thing you can do with your ABOUT ME page is to include some of your feedback.  If you have great feedback you want everyone to know.  You can easily include a number of recent feedback scores and comments on your ABOUT ME page.  This just enhances your expert status by showing your prospects how many others have trusted in you for previous purchases.

The most important feature of ABOUT ME pages is that it is the one place on eBay where they allow links to websites away from eBay.  You cannot put any external links on any of your auction pages. You can put external links on your ABOUT ME page.  If you can take advantage of this, you can really maximize your revenue from eBay.

If you can get traffic to your ABOUT ME page and then get that traffic to click out to your website where you are selling other products, you can tap in to the enormous traffic that eBay gets and siphon some of it to your sites.  If you send them to a squeeze page you can capture their emails and get them on your email marketing list. 

Setting up your ABOUT ME page is simple.  You can use the ABOUT ME page wizard that eBay provides.  The wizard walks you step by step through a few screens where you fill in some information and click on some choices.  It gives you options to add pictures that eBay can host or you can host elsewhere on the internet. At the end you click finished and your ABOUT ME page is good to go.

If you are so inclined you can also enter your own html code, skip the wizard all together and totally customize your ABOUT ME page.  If you can set up your ABOUT ME page to convert readers to leads that click through to your main website, you can enjoy the benefit of increased traffic.

If you sell on Ebay don’t neglect the ABOUT ME page.  When used properly the ABOUT ME page can enhance your eBay and off eBay sales.  It is one more tool you can use to be a successful online marketer.
